A Stage Theory

Linda Elder with Richard Paul Though most teachers aspire to make critical thinking a primary objective of their instruction, most also do not realize that, to develop as thinkers, students must pass through stages of development in critical thinking. That is, most teachers are unaware of the levels of intellectual development that people go through as they improve as thinkers. We believe that significant gains in the intellectual quality of student work will not be achieved except to the degree that teachers recognize that skilled critical thinking develops, only when properly cultivated, and only through predictable stages.

Quizlet

When it comes to education, Quizlet takes a different path than other online learning platforms and learning management systems. Unlike Khan Academy or Lynda. com, which rely on video tutorials, Quizlet employs user-generated sets of terms and descriptions. While those sets lack the glamor of videos, Quizlet has systematically added features to its repertoire for rote learning. With access to literally millions of sets, students can practice up on just about any topic, from intermediate Spanish to early American history. Whereas Edmodo LMS and Schoology blur the boundaries between education and social networking, Quizlet focuses squarely on ease of use and memorization.

Strategies To Promote Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom

by Stacey Lange on June 12, 2014 June 12, 2014, Volume 1, Issue 5, No. 8 Driving Question:  What Does Critical Thinking Look and Sound Like in an Elementary Classroom? The other day, I walked into one of our primary multi-aged classroom communities. I noticed many wonderful things. It was clear the students were engaged in what they were doing. Critical thinking is a skill that young minds will undeniably need and exercise well beyond their school years. Experts agree that in keeping up with the ever-changing technological advances, students will need to obtain, understand, and analyze information on a much more efficient scale.

Our Concept and Definition of Critical Thinking

Why Critical Thinking? The Problem Everyone thinks.  It is our nature to do so. But much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed, or downright prejudiced. Yet, the quality of our life and that of what we produce, make, or build depends precisely on the quality of our thought. Shoddy thinking is costly, both in money and in quality of life. Excellence in thought, however, must be systematically cultivated. A Definition Critical thinking is that mode of thinking — about any subject, content, or problem — in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it.
