The Thesis Statement

The thesis statement is that sentence or two in your textthat contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about. Although it is certainly possible to write a good essay without a thesis statement (many narrative essays, for example, contain only an implied thesis statement), the lack of a thesis statement may well be a symptom of an essay beset by a lack of focus. Many writers think of a thesis statement as an umbrella: everything that you carry along in your essay has to fit under this umbrella, and if you try to take on packages that don't fit, you will either have to get a bigger umbrella or something's going to get wet.

Developing A Thesis

Think of yourself as a member of a jury, listening to a lawyer who is presenting an opening argument. You'll want to know very soon whether the lawyer believes the accused to be guilty or not guilty, and how the lawyer plans to convince you. Readers of academic essays are like jury members: before they have read too far, they want to know what the essay argues as well as how the writer plans to make the argument. After reading your thesis statement, the reader should think, "This essay is going to try to convince me of something. I'm not convinced yet, but I'm interested to see how I might be.

Defining Key Terms Much misunderstanding in human communication results from people bringing different meanings to the words they use in speaking and writing. Effective researchers seek to avoid this difficulty by clearly explaining the meanings they assign to key terms in their investigations. If, early in the research process, you define precisely what you intend by words and phrases crucial to your project, (a) you help identify appropriate methods of gathering and interpreting data and (b) your advisors can judge at the outset how well they agree with your definitions, thereby saving you possible trouble during subsequent stages of your project.

Write your data analysis

This section and the next, on reporting and discussing your findings, deal with the body of the thesis. In a doctoral thesis, this will consist of a number of chapters. This is where you present the data that forms the basis of your investigation, shaped by the way you have thought about it. In other words, you tell your readers the story that has emerged from your findings. The form of these central chapters should be consistent with this story and its components. Every thesis writer has to present and discuss the results of their inquiry. In this website we consider these two activities separately, while recognising that in many kinds of thesis they will be integrated.

How to Write a Thesis Statement (High School Students)

1 Understand what a thesis statement in general needs to accomplish. Your thesis needs to express a "considered point of view. " Note that a considered point of view is different from an opinion. Anyone can express an opinion. You can say that you prefer chocolate to vanilla ice cream, to which another can either agree or disagree. This kind of exchange, however, neither leads to further conversation about nor investigation of an issue. Blanket opinions are conversation stoppers. A thesis statement is a conversation starter. 2 Define your point of view.

How to Create a Thesis & Outline for a Poetry Essay

Any academic essay must have a thesis statement and a poetry essay is no exception. The main purpose of a poetry essay is not to summarize the poem, but to develop an in-depth idea that makes an argument based upon an analysis of the poem. The thesis statement should contain the essay's main argument about the poem. A poetry essay develops an interpretation about a particular poem. This interpretation contains an argument about what you think the poet is saying or doing in the poem and what effect the poem’s various elements, like diction or rhyme, have on the poem as a whole.
