Book Review: The Noticer by Andy Andrews

A ndy Andrews is a master story-teller, a modern blend of Will Rogers, Paul Harvey, and Garrison Keillor. He is one of the few people I have ever met who is both a compelling writer and an incredible speaker. Andy is also a “noticer. ” He sees things that others miss and extracts from those observations simple but profound wisdom. This was the secret behind his first book, The Traveler’s Gift, which is the only book I have published in my career that hit all four majorNew York Timesbestseller lists: fiction, non-fiction, advice, and business. The editors at theTimesjust couldn’t seem to figure out how to categorize Andy’s work.

Brief Summary of the Ring

A Brief Synopsis of Der Ring des Nibelungen Background (from Alan Blyth's Wagner's Ring: An introduction, 4-5). "In November 1851, Wagner drafted a first scenario for Das Rheingold, projected in three acts, with the title The Rape of the Rheingold. Then came a tentative sketch for Die Walkure, or at least two acts of it. . . by December 1852 he was able to write at the end of his huge manuscript: 'Close of the stage-festival play'. By now he had come to see that no known stage could present his vast work adequately: a specially built festival theatre would be required.

The Vampire Diaries recap: Love Bites

Do you like how I didn’t even try to write a real subhead for this recap and just went with “Everything changed, again?” So much happened. And no one was even shirtless. Let’s dive in. So Mystic Falls has THE worst security of any high school in America. Not only can kids work out in the weight room late at night by themselves, but, as we found out when sweaty Matt opened a classroom and set off a slew of mousetraps, they can also break in for senior prank night. Honestly, the mousetraps seemed pretty lame to me, but that’s coming from someone who was part of a senior prank that involved setting mice loose in the school.

Insidious Movie Review & Film Summary (2011)

"Insidious" is an affectionate visit to the Haunted House Movie, a genre that seems classic in contrast to Queasy-Cam gorefests. It depends on characters, atmosphere, sneaky happenings and mounting dread. This one is not terrifically good, but moviegoers will get what they're expecting. It's a new collaboration between director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell, who launched the "Saw" franchise. As the movie opens, an unsuspecting family is moving into a big old house they must have found through the Amityville Multiple Listing Service.

The Civil War Summary & Analysis

For four years between 1861 and 1865 the United States engaged in a civil war. Divisions between the free North and the slaveholding South erupted into a full-scale conflict after the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860. Eleven southern states seceded from the Union, collectively turning their back on the idea of a single American nation. Lincoln, who had been in office for only six weeks, declared these acts of secession illegal, and asked Congress for 500,000 soldiers to crush what threatened to be an aggressive rebellion. In April 1861, the first shots were fired and what followed became a national tragedy of unimaginable proportions.

The Reader Movie Review & Film Summary (2008)

The crucial decision in "The Reader" is made by a 24-year-old youth, who has information that might help a woman about to be sentenced to life in prison, but withholds it. He is ashamed to reveal his affair with this woman. By making this decision, he shifts the film's focus from the subject of German guilt about the Holocaust and turns it on the human race in general. The film intends his decision as the key to its meaning, but most viewers may conclude that "The Reader" is only about the Nazis' crimes and the response to them by post-war German generations.
